HRV and stress: what the signal can tell you.
Heart rate variability can add useful context to recovery, but it is not a direct stress meter. The most meaningful comparison is usually with your own consistent pattern.

What is HRV?
Heart rate variability, or HRV, describes variation in the time between successive heartbeats. Your heart does not beat like a metronome: those intervals change as your autonomic nervous system responds to breathing, activity, recovery and the demands around you.
Wearables commonly estimate HRV from optical pulse measurements or derive it from electrical heart measurements. Devices and platforms may use different recording windows, conditions and statistical measures, so two apps can show different values without either value necessarily being “wrong.”
How does HRV relate to stress, cortisol and recovery?
HRV can change when your body is responding to training, poor sleep, illness, alcohol, travel, psychological demands and many other factors. Some of those demands also affect cortisol biology, but HRV is not a cortisol measurement. A sustained shift from your own usual pattern may be relevant to activation or recovery; it still does not identify the cause by itself.
A lower reading is not automatically bad, and a higher reading is not automatically good. Exercise can temporarily change recovery signals; slow breathing can increase short-term variability; measurement timing can change the result. Interpreting a cortisol-related rhythm needs HRV alongside sleep, heart rate, activity, timing and personal context.
Think trend, not verdict. One HRV value is a data point. Several comparable readings, combined with sleep, resting heart rate, activity and how you feel, can form a more useful pattern.
Why your personal baseline matters
HRV ranges vary widely between people. Comparing your number with a friend’s, an influencer’s or a generic target can create noise. A personal baseline asks a better question: is today meaningfully different from your recent, comparable pattern?
A useful baseline needs enough observations and relatively consistent measurement conditions. If you change devices, recording time or wearing habits, the comparison may need time to settle again.
How to read wearable HRV more calmly
- Look at the collection method. Overnight trends and deliberate spot measurements answer slightly different questions.
- Compare like with like. Use the same device and similar measurement conditions where possible.
- Add nearby signals. Consider sleep, resting heart rate, activity, recent training and how you feel.
- Look for repeated movement. Avoid making big decisions from a single unusual day.
- Leave room for uncertainty. A wearable estimate can be missing, noisy or affected by fit and motion.
